Episode 3: "Your Gratitude Matters: What Gives Caregivers Courage on the Front Lines of COVID19"
Watch for FREE {{{NO SIGN-IN // NO SUBSCRIPTION REQUIRED}}}
The COVID-19 crisis has driven our culture apart in many ways, from economic breakdown to social distancing. Some of us are isolated at home, with our families 24/7 for the first time ever, the internet being our only tether to the wider world. And some of us- especially hospital staff - are right in the trenches of this battle fighting on the front lines, quarantined from our families for their protection. Two completely different worlds in one.
In this episode, we will bring those worlds together, by bringing caregivers on the front lines of COVID-19 into your home to hear the stories of how the power of the heart- and your gratitude- gives them the courage to keep fighting for people's lives and honor people's sacred deaths, at the risk of their own.

Sandra Solano, MD, MS
Executive Director, Integro, LLC
Former Bureau Chief of Research and State Registrar, Ohio Department of Health
Dr. Sandra Solano was born in Bogota, Colombia, where she became a physician. Dissatisfied with the ‘sick’ model of conventional Western medicine, Sandra came to Ohio to pursue post-graduate studies in Preventive Medicine and Public Health. She began her work at The Ohio State University Hospitals as a researcher and then as Director of Clinical Quality at Ohio State University Medical Center. Sandra then worked with the Ohio Department of Health as the Director of Health Statistics, State Registrar, and with the Ohio Department of Job and Human Services as Director of Research, Assistant Director of Medicaid, and Health Policy Advisor. Finally, she served as Principal for McGuire & Associates providing, project technical assistance and evaluation services for preventive programs.
While she enjoyed a successful and fulfilling career in public health, she continued studying alternative health modalities and how they could improve wellness. Despite her professional success, she felt disconnected and unfulfilled. After extensive research, Sandra chose several tools to study and practice. One of the most potent tools Sandra experienced was the HeartMath’s Resilience Advantage™ program. Because of her transformation with HeartMath’s techniques, Sandra became a certified trainer for the program and founded Integro.
After personally experiencing and practicing these tools, Sandra feels connected with her authentic self, feeling a sense of hope and peace that she wants to share with others. Learning about and experiencing these techniques brought her a new understanding of wellness as a state of balance and wholeness. Sandra’s passion is to help others to find that connection, authenticity, peace, and hope that she is now able to experience.
Gayle Novack, BSN, MA, RN, HNB-BC
Chief Nursing Officer (or CNO) and Incident Commander for Emergency Services Management
Ascension – St. John Hospital
Gayle Novack has been a registered nurse for 49 years, having always worked in acute care hospitals in a variety of roles. Much of her service has been in clinical leadership. In addition to being a board-certified holistic nurse, she holds a masters degree in organizational leadership as she is as passionate about leadership and organizational culture as she is about nursing. Gayle has been with Ascension St. John Hospital in Detroit, Michigan for 39 years. She is presently the Chief Nursing Officer there. An additional temporary “title” due to the massive outbreak of COVID 19 cases in Michigan, particularly in the metropolitan Detroit area is that of Incident Commander for Emergency Services Management at the 690-bed hospital. Gayle’s history of study and application of holistic nursing practice, Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring Science® and the practice of HeartMath’s Resilience Advantage™ tools as well as personal spiritual practices have been powerful tools in facilitating a grounded culture in the presence of devastating communicable dis-ease.
Nancy Cassisa, BSN, RN, HNB-BC, CHMT, Caritas Coach®
Clinical Nurse Manager, Trauma & Med/Surg
Ascension – St. John Hospital
Nancy is a joy-filled and passionate leader of two dynamic nursing teams at Ascension St. John Hospital. Nancy began working in Ascension in 2010, on one of the same nursing units she continues to lead today. Nancy earned her ADN from Macomb Community College, BSN from Chamberlain University, and is currently pursuing her MSN degree through Walden University. Nancy is a graduate of the Integrated Healing Arts Academy and completed the Caritas Coach Education Program with the Watson Caring Science Institute. She is board certified in Holistic Nursing and a HeartMath® Certified Trainer.
Nancy’s journey into holistic nursing through Caring Science has inspired great passion and enthusiasm in her nursing practice and leadership. She began the “Take 5” initiative to promote nursing and physician communication; encouraging all members of the healthcare team to take five minutes to sit down with their clients, face to face and heart to heart; discovering five things about their clients, unrelated to their hospitalization. This offered a wonderful opportunity for personal connection for both the client and the caregiver.
Nancy is passionate about sharing stories of her own experiences in nursing and those of the frontline staff. At the Annual Ascension St. John Holistic Nursing Conference 2019, Nancy shared her own inspirational journey into nursing along with a myriad of humbling and inspirational narratives, reminding us all of the great joys of nursing.
