About Indira Mahjan:
American soprano, Indira Mahajan has gained international acclaim performing with leading opera companies and orchestras throughout the world. The Marian Anderson Award winning soprano has been praised for her “strongly centered, richly textured soprano” by New York Magazine.
Operatic highlights include the title roles in Madame Butterfly, Sour Angelica, Aida, and Lucia di Lammermoor. She has performed the roles of Musetta and Mimi in La Bohème, Violetta in La Traviata, Gilda in Rigoletto, Nedda in I Pagliacci, Susanna in the Marriage of Figaro, and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. Indira has performed over 200 performances of one of her signature roles, Bess from the beloved American opera Porgy and Bess . Of her recent performance, Opera News wrote, “the incandescent Indira Mahajan as Bess performed an unforgettable performance. Mahajan’s experience shows, not only in her detailed acting, but also in the exquisite way she shapes her vocal lines. It is a wonderful instrument with a sexy throbbing lower register and a thrilling top.”
Her orchestral repertoire extends from works in the Baroque and Classical genres to the foremost composers of today including the riveting oratorio by Steven Stucky and Gene Scheer’s August 4, 1964 conducted by Jaap Van Zweden performed with the Dallas Symphony which can be heard on a recording by Naxos.
Indira Mahajan was born in New York City to South Asian and African American parents. She began her musical studies at age 5 as a violinist. Her mother, Juilliard trained mezzo soprano Barbara Mahajan was her first voice teacher. She later went on to study voice and the Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music and Art. She received her Bachelor’s degree from the Oberlin College and Master’s Degree from the Mannes College of Music

About Donna Weng Friedman:
Award winning pianist Donna Weng Friedman enjoys a varied career as a soloist, chamber musician, teacher, curator and app developer. In collaboration with WQXR, she created and produced Heritage and Harmony, a virtual concert video series in celebration of Asian Pacific Heritage Month. https://www.wqxr.org/story/heritage-harmony/ She is the co-creator and co- host of HER/MUSIC;HER/STORY, a mini-series on WQXR as well as a concert series that shines a light on women composers, past and present. https://www.wqxr.org/shows/her-music-her- story/ She was the guest speaker on TEDx Santa Barbara’s series Making Waves: Conversations with Influencers and Disruptors.
In January 2021, she was the featured guest artist on the National Women’s History Museum’s series NWHM Presents!: [email protected], honoring women whose activism and talents serve to inspire others. In collaboration with the National Women’s History Museum, Ms. Weng Friedman will launch two new educational programs in 2022, both featuring leading female BIPOC role models, both dedicated to our school-age girls of color.
She has performed as soloist with major symphony orchestras worldwide, made New York debut at the prestigious 92nd Street Y, and has performed as soloist at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.
The curator of the Donna Weng Friedman Master Class Series at Princeton University, she is a member of Princeton University Music Department’s Advisory Council. She received a B.A. from Princeton University and a M.M. from the Juilliard School.
She was the music supervisor and recording artist for the award-winning film documentary “Frames of Life” and created “TheMusicBeeClub” interactive classical music apps for children, produced by sixteen-time Grammy Award winner David Frost.
