Entrepreneur, wife, mother of three, health coach, yoga instructor, personal trainer, health & wellness advocate and so much more… I have been on a journey of self-discovery and health & wellness for most of my adult life. I was always active in sports as a kid and never had to work too hard to stay in shape.
I grew up in a big, loving & loud Italian Catholic family. My parents taught me about the importance of family, friendship, and faith. They also taught me to always believe in myself. My dad's famous saying was, "If you can believe it, you can do it." I never thought there was anything I couldn't do.
I have been on a journey of self-discovery and health & wellness for most of my adult life. I was always active in sports as a kid and never had to work too hard to stay in shape.
After going to college, gaining the freshman 40, and feeling really bad, I realized I needed to make some changes. I started running to get in shape, and as I did, I began to see its effect on my mind. Running became my thinking time, and I had to have it. I changed my diet at that time, too, and really began to feel good. It all just kind of stuck.
In my late 20's I met my husband, and we were married a few years later. We started a business, got pregnant, and built a house all in one year. During this busy time, I found I had to make time for myself in the early morning hours or go without. I decided I couldn't go without it. I began sneaking out in the morning, getting my workout and morning routine in, and coming back home before anyone was up. The morning was and still is my favorite time of day. It's almost 30 years later, and I still love my morning alone time.
The mind, body, spirit connection has always intrigued me. Over the years, I have enjoyed learning about and trying different modalities to keep myself in balance. Discovering the importance of self-care techniques has really made an impact on the quality of my life. I regularly practice gratitude, journaling, meditation, spiritual reading, exercise, yoga, eating a balanced diet, acupuncture, Chinese herbs, essential oils, massage, chakra clearing, the law of attraction, and clearing limiting beliefs. I created a business called Conscious Health so that I could help others on their journey of self-discovery.
I received my certification in Holistic Health Coaching and Gut Health through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN). I am an RYT200 Yoga Instructor and personal trainer. I have gone through Medical Intuition coursework with Deborah King and the Intensive and Progressive courses with Dr. Joe Dispenza.
It gives me great pleasure to share what I've learned with others to help them on their journey to become their best selves, and that being the co-host of Authentic Wellness with Joanie and Joey is the next step in my journey of self-discovery.
>>>> About Joey
Growing up on a cattle farm in rural NC, I learned early the value of hard work. It also instilled in me a philosophy that all your "chores" had to be done before you did anything fun for yourself. Boy did that one stick! I spent most of my life as a caregiver, making sure everyone else had what they needed and were taken care of.
One December morning in 2010, my world turned upside down! My father was recovering from his latest round of chemo. I was at home taking care of my one-year-old son and three-year-old daughter when I got the call…. my mom had been found non-responsive and was on her way to the hospital. My parents lived an hour away from me, and I had very little family other than them.
Over the course of the next year, my parents' health steadily declined and so did mine. By the time my mom passed in November of 2011 and my dad passed in July of 2012, I had lost 30 pounds, took handfuls of pills to sleep, drank copious amounts of caffeine to stay awake, and felt miserable with no energy in between. With two small children, I knew I had to make changes to live the life I wanted!
No one could get me back on track but ME. That's when my research began. It began with what I thought was going to be a nutrition class but became so much more. I enrolled in the Institute of Integrative Nutrition (IIN). The information I learned in this course was invaluable and really inspired the rest of my journey. I went to my first ever yoga class and ultimately became a certified yoga instructor, did meditation workshops and now lead workshops, learned about essential oils, took time in nature.
I was doing pretty well at this self-care thing, but I certainly wasn't perfect. In 2018 when my marriage ended, I reverted back to old ways and survived primarily on Oreos and wine… not exactly a healthy choice!
Thanks to what I had learned and the support of the best primary food -- the love of friends -- I got myself out of the dark hole I had fallen into and surfaced a new and stronger person. Now I hope to share the things I learned while continuing to learn, to help others who know they need to love themselves more but don't have a clue of how to start. They say don't try to reinvent the wheel; follow the path that others have charted. So what do you say… Shall we journey together?
